iPod is everywhere!

Im sure there have been a million threads about this, but iPod is everywhere. Everyone I see walking around has one, I just saw one in Blade: Trinity and ads are all over Gvmnt Cntr in Boston. Not tomention the red sox radio announcers were just talking about them. Oh yeah, in Newsweek this week, in a hearing loss article, they called kid the iPod generation. Is it just me?

Yeah, it's crazy! I just got back from the Royal Hideaway in Mexico and 9 out of 10 people who were listening to a music player were using iPods!

At the Cancun airport my wife and I were sitting next to and elderly couple (apporx. 70s) that both had iPods!

At Great America (Theme Park) there is about 4 out of 5 people with one.

In fact i was one point away from winning a shuffle.

i Know 17 people who have at least one, only one of them owns a mac! Well two in a few months when i buy one

Today I was in San Francisco and I must have saw at least 4 iPod ads. 2 posters on the street, 1 small billboard, and this one HUGE billboard by the freeway. Plus the office I was in today 1 or 2 people were listening to their iPods (while working) and on the way home I saw a person crossing the street with white headphones. Oh yeah, there was also an ad on the radio about that stereo speaker thingy from Bose for the iPod.

I think its great. We are slowly infiltrating the masses...before they know it, they will be obsessivly visiting MacRumors checking for the latest news and posting how they don't think the elevator photos are of a real "iHome"

The iPod has become what the Walkman became 30 years ago. Although here in NYC a lot of people are not using the white headphones when traveling with their iPods on the subway, because there have apparently been a lot of iPods stolen, and the white headphones tip off the criminals.

I was in Australia (Sydney) last week and saw plenty of iPods and iPod ads. They're not so popular here in NZ, partly to do with price. I picked up a 20 GB (my first iPod) while I was over there, it was cheap! NZ$400 instead of $515

Nobody uses a Walkman, but they do use the evolved version - iPods. In 30 years, you can bet people will still want personal audio, but it'll be something evolved from the iPod.

At the beginning of last year I was (i think) one of the only people at my university (Sydney Uni - very big university) to have one. People hadn't really even heard of them - Australia is always a bit behind the times (we dont even have TiVo!!!) Now every man and his dog has one! Most people have the clickwheel one but some have minis. Old people have them, even young kids (<10 years) have them! It is insane! Basically every one got one for Christmas 2004 in Australia. I don't know what made the iPod suddenly explode it just sort of came out of no-where.

Its basically a fashion thing i think. 99% of people are using them with PCs and thus don't understand the full benefits the iPod has with syncing your calander and contacts etc... Most probably don't understand that it can be used like a flash disk. And no-one has a clue about hacking the sucka or doing weird things like putting Linux on it ("u did what!"). I kind of question why these people get iPods. They could easily get something smaller and cheaper (again most people got an iPod before the Shuffle was released) that would more than adequately suit there needs. Thats why I think its all about fashion. Some unintelligent pea-brain retards just buy the white earphones and use them on their walkmans to look cool!!! Give me a break!

I hope it doesnt happen to macs in general. Im feel like im in part of some secret society and I dont want the masses to ruin it!

I kinda agree. Although I want Apple to do well, it's nice seeing people drool over your computer and iPod when they first see it.

If (or when) Mac's become more common, it will be like, you have a Mac? oh yeah that cool.

And finding other Mac users won't be as fulfilling either.

Oh yeah, and everyone and their dog has iPod at my university and hometown.

The day they released iTunes for the PC I bought my 3G 40GB iPod (Oct 2003). I only knew a couple of people with iPods, and they were those "Mac people"...
I continually kept trying to convince everyone that came within ear shot that the iPod was not only the gadget of the decade, but had changed my life...

Then 12 months ago I switched...
and now have I not only convinced several friends to buy an iPod, but I have also convinced half a dozen people switch as well!

iPod - still love it... but not sure whether I love that more than my PB or vice versa... tough... am I allowed two first loves?

I got an iPod photo last year, like in october or november. I have a 21 month old son, and not only does he know what it does (play music), but he can take headphones, put them on, plug the cord in, take the iPod off of hold, press play/pause, and switch between songs... and he has been doing this for months. Just goes to show how easy and intutive the iPod's interface is, or perhaps I just have a genius baby.

Have been kind of half thinking/joking about getting him a shuffle or mini for his birthday in Septemer... More really and excuse for me to get him one.

I don't mind the iPod being popular, but Macs are an entirely different matter.

I sat on the a-train in new york city on the way home about an hour ago, saw 5 people listening to thier ipods, white buds gave them away. 2 posters and 3 people on the way to the train. 8 people in less then 10 minutes.

I bought the very first iPod the week it came out (I think) in the UK. It cost me £350 as I remember - for 5GB. No doubt they have got better, but receiving the 3G 15GB model came no-where near to the feeling I got when opening up the Original. Everyone has an iPod now, it's not special to own one anymore.

Over 3 years ago I was saying to my friends
Me: "iPod, it's an iPod!"
Them: "What's that?"
Me: "It's a music player, it holds 1000 songs look at what it does!"
Them: "So what? Why would I want one?"
Me (somewhat lost for words) "Don't you see, you can carry round your whole music collection - look how small it is - look at the interface!?!"
Them: "So what? I think my MD player is better."
Me: "No, it so isn't! - Just look how easy this is..." etc etc.

But no amount would make them see. These were the days of OS 9.
Now of course they all know what an iPod is and a lot of them own one. To them, at least, they know I was there over 3 years ago! And they all come to me for iPod advice.
Sidenote: at that time the only other person I knew with one was a PC user - he managed to use all the hacks etc. successfully to get it to work! - I was impressed - he had to buy a firewire PCMCIA, special software to go from music match and all sorts!

I got my first Mac 5 years ago, before OS X, before it was "cool", a PB Pismo, and am using it right now, with my iMac G4 beaming the college network to the laptop via Airport.

I can't stand the iPod and Albook posers. I always think "those apple buds SUCK man" (and I should know! - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=121391).

I wish it was still special to own an iPod, but I think it's safe to say it no longer is.
I just hope it doesn't go the same way with the Mac, but I fear it already is (a tell-tale sign is the quality control slipping).

Still, we're whooping any PC's ass!

Well, some people still do use them! I seem them in my gym.

But Sony did leverage the popularity of the Walkman, which turned the company into a much bigger company and helped bring attention to other Sony products. So, the iPod will probably eventually help Apple do the same, if Apple doesn't make any big mistakes.

I hope Apple hardware/software becomes wildly successful, and that has nothing to do with the fact that I own Apple stock.
