Suppliers to Begin Preparing 32" and 37" Apple Television Sets in Early 2012?

Digitimes reports that Apple's suppliers are set to begin preparing materials for the new Apple television set during the first quarter of 2012, with the company reportedly targeting a launch for the second or third quarter of the year. Apple is said to be initially working on 32-inch and 37-inch sizes.

The supply chain of Apple will start preparing materials for iTV sets in the first quarter of 2012 in order to meet Apple's schedule to launch the new display products in the second or the third quarter of 2012, according to industry sources. [...]

Media reports in Korea also indicated that Samsung Electronics started producing chips for the iTVs in November 2011, while Sharp will produce the displays for the new TVs.

While the new television sets will reportedly integrate most if not all of the functionality of the current Apple TV set-top box, sources also indicate that Apple is likely to release an updated standalone Apple TV box next year as well.

While rumors of an Apple television set have been floating around for quite some time, they gained steam several months ago when Steve Jobs was quoted in Walter Isaacson's authorized biography of him as saying that he had "finally cracked" how to create a revolutionary interface for a television product. Rumors have since suggested that Apple is working on a Siri-enabled television set that would be introduced by 2013.

I'm very curious to see what Apple has been planning. It'd really be excellent if they also come out with some sort of iTunes subscription. I turned off my cable and I do miss it sometimes although I'm getting by ok with just Netflix (and the occasional Hulu). However, I would pay to get access to some more shows that those two companies don't offer.

And this is EXACTLY the reason many have been saying it's a bad idea.

Make a box and anyone on the planet (almost!) can plug the box into any TV of any size/make and use the thing.

As soon as you make a TV, it's going to be limited to the model you make.

Someone like Samsung will make TV's of all different sizes and price points.
Apple comes along with just 2 models... What's the point?

I still have my doubts about TV, and I'm quite sure this will be mainly a US product for years to come as bringing TV-content with the narrow-minded network companies to the rest of the world will be a PITA.

Also, if it's true that it's 32 and 37" only, it's just to small to be interesting. I don't have a huge one right now, only 40", but if I were to replace it, it would definitely be by a larger one.

Based on those sizes and the other rumors about Jobs' revelation regarding control and the decline in desktop sales, does anyone think that the new TVs won't just be "internet enabled," but rather actual full fledged TV/computers? Seems logical. Lots of people watch TV on the big iMacs, and the iTV isn't that far from being a computer.

I have not once bought this rumor. Let everyone else make the sets and Apple makes the upgraded Apple TV 3 (or whatever) that turns your set into a iOS device.

32" and 37" are too close of a gap of sizes. They need a wider gap. They're basically the same TV. I'm guessing there will be one in the 30's one in the 40's and one in the 50's.

I'm not sure if TV actually has a future at all. I have a computer, and it plays anything I want, except the usual live TV shows which I don't like anyway. More and more people are hating live TV and the new "rewindable" TVs just show that there's a need for more control over what's playing and when. I wouldn't spend money on another screen that only plays videos, instead, I could buy a huge monitor for my computer that does almost everything a TV does, plus is extremely useful for things like Photoshop and video editing.

Maybe Apple will indeed surprise us with what their iTV does, but I think it's only really necessary for those who are in love with TV in the first place… Unless it tethers to a computer and costs the same as a computer screen.

Interesting about the size. To be honest I'd probably peg this as a new set of higher end monitors with television capabilities, but that's just my thinking. Although I do think that in this day and age people leave televisions of this size for the kitchen or bedroom or something like that.

I'd also like to know what panels Sharp use, I believe it's IPS, in which case I'm not a fan on large screen televisions. PVA screens are my preference for a television due to the better contrast ratios compared to IPS. When watching a movie I'm interested in seeing a vibrant picture rather than accurate colours. Again, just my thoughts.

One last thought would be that this baby WILL have some kind of remote, whether it be a remote with a single button for siri (which would be a terrible idea), or a numpad with a Siri button, who knows. We'll just have to wait and see.

Wasn't this the thing we where stressing about when Apple did every new product? Not enough options, no room for different sizes of iMac's and all stuff like that. I'll wait and se.

these sizes are way too small for sure. I think Apple tv is still the way to go for me. I already have one tv2 and i'd be willing to buy another at $100 rather than buy an overpriced tv model from Apple. I'm sure like all Apple products there will be a premium on the cost.

Hmmm works for me, we're still using the Sony Trinitron 19 or 20" but its on its way, sad One of the best TV's we've owned.

But that's the same with the iPhone, iPad, Mac etc. Apple releases just one iPhone model per year (exception of colour and size) - look how many other competitors have.

I'm glad Apple is keeping it simple with 2 models, though a third offering 50" or so would be nice. If Apple had lots of models, they'd fragment their lineup.

If Apple made a 50" version, I'd buy it if it was priced under £2000. Of course, that isn't going to happen, Apple's 50" TV will cost £3000. But you never know.. if they want to penetrate and revolutionise the TV market, they can't make it too expensive.

I bought a large flat screen TV just 2 years ago. I won't need a new one for at least 7 more years. I also already have a 27" iMac. Why would I need a TV of almost the same size?

Let me think about that. So you think that I'll throw out my 40" TV and replace it with a 16" TV because it is made by Apple? Is that what you are saying?

I'll let you in on a secret: While lots of Apple's competitors think that is what happening, that people buy Apple products because of the Apple sticker, and while the less bright nerds think the same because they don't get what Apple is doing, it's not true. People buy products, including Apple products, because they are better. Sometimes they will buy products because of a brand name because they trust the manufacturer based on past experience. But nobody would buy an obviously inferior product for the brand name.

The only product that would make sense to me would be one or two or more manufacturers creating "Apple TV ready" devices, where an Apple TV can be plugged in, hidden away safely, taking power from the TV, and no cabling needed at all.
