broken iphoto links

In a misguided attempt to organize and name jpg photos, I "named" all of the individual pictures in a new album. I then used that name to change the file name and the original file name -- BAD MOVE. Now the link is broken and I can't do anything with the pictures -- there are thumbnails that will open in preview, but I can't move them around or run slide show. I get the dreaded !
I tried to restore, but nothing works. Isn't there some way to save these pictures and make them useable again?
