Hi guys, my friend has a Macbook 4,1: 2.16 white macbook from 2008. She want to upgrade the RAM and I'm wondering if it will take 2x2GB, as the supported is only 2GB.

Thanks!

Any of them can use up to 4GB. Some can use up to 6. I know OWC has a lookup for this stuff. Buy it from any source you like. Just make sure you read comments to verify someone has used it successfully on a Mac.

You can find specs on all Apple products, including maximum RAM:
  • By visiting EveryMac.com: Actual Maximum RAM
  • By using Mactracker
  • By entering your serial number here to find specs for your model. (Be aware that some models can use more RAM than Apple shows. Check EveryMac or MacTracker to verify.)

You need to double-check exactly which MacBook it is

If it is a MacBook 4,1 then it is not a 2.16GHz model but may be 2008

If it is a 2,16GHz then it is a MacBook 2,1

Max ram for MacBook 2,1 is 4GB but will only see 3.3GHz
Max ram for MacBook 4,1 is 6GB and will see all of it.

The Kingston ram you linked to on Amazon.co.uk will work fine if it is a MacBook 2,1 BUT WON'T work in the MacBook 4,1.

Go to Apple Menu>About this Mac>more info and double-check the MacBook identifier

The ram you linked to is not exactly very good value either !!

Thanks for sticking with me. Unfortunately she's already ordered it, so I guess we are returning it. About this mac says it's a MacBook 4,1. 2.1 GHz.

Is there somewhere else I shouldbe shopping then ? I cannot find a 6gb set on amazon

FWIW 6 GB usually isn't sold as a set since it consists of a 4GB module and a 2 GB module. Buy separate modules or order from a place that specializes in memory.

4GB PC5300 kit from Crucial for £43.19 or

£17.99 for a 2GB PC5300 Crucial module from Amazon - so £35.98 for the 4GB (I told you the original price for the PC6400 modules was not cheap !!)

Thanks very much! So I can also get her a 4GB and a 2GB module to hit the 6GB? I assume wit the age of the laptop there would be minimal difference to a matched pair.

Does she really need 6GB ?

4GB DDR2 ram chips are not too cheap (£40-50 each) while 2GB chips are £18 each ....

We're music students/composers, so running heavy things in Logic. I'm on a Mac Pro with 12GB at the moment.

She's happy to try 4GB for now - it's 4x what she has!

Thanks for all the info.
