i've been using my ibook(g3 600) as a hub for a scanner and color inkjet printer.

it's acting up now.

i walked into it's room and heard it clicking, kinda like a clock.

i hard shutdown, turned it on, it started clicking again the same way and then boots into a grey screen (clicking quits) and at the middle of the screen is a folder with question mark flashing intermittantly with a half face/half face finder logo.

anyone got some help for me?

thanks :()

Sounds like your harddrive has just crapped out on you. Sorry.

Run the Hardware Test CD or boot up with your OS X CDs and run Disk Utilities to check your HDD.

(FYI, the question mark/happy face thingy means no system disk found)

Sounds like you HD flew south.

If you're interested I have 2 for sale, a 15GB and a 20GB.

thank you for the response.

the noise is coming from the left side too, if that matters..

if it is indeed the hard drive, was i potentially doing anything to decrease it's life?

what are common causes of hard drive crash?

could i hook up and boot off a firewire drive?

does any of this mean my laptop as a whole is in trouble?

thanks :()

Yes, you can boot off of a FireWire Drive.

No, the laptop as a whole is most likely alright.
