iPhone encryption

Is there any way to have the data on the actual phone encrypted?

And as for the option to encrypt the backup in iTunes, is that only encrypting the backup stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup?

Not with the stock OS as far as I know.

According to Apple, developers can use data protection to protect application data. All data on the phone is transparently hardware encrypted (which is why a wipe doesn't take very long), and data protection enhances that
