Is it just me, or has the price of RAM been increasing and increasing? I remember when you could get a 512 chip for the TiBook for 99 bucks. Now its 300.00 (from coast to coast memory) for 2. (150 a piece, or more if you buy them individually)

Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know why this is happening?? Does it have anything to to with many computers moving to DDR Ram? I want to upgrade to 1GB on my PowerBook, but I dont want to spend 300 bucks.

Where can I get it cheaper? 'Coast to Coast' (also 1-800-4Memory, same company) is as cheap as it got, I thought.

512 MB RAM

not sure...

I don't remember 512 chips ever being that low....but then again I wasn't opting to get one when it came time for me to upgrade...

OtherWorldComputing has them from $159.00 - $249.95 and that's the cheapest I've seen around...

Thanks--that is cheaper.

😕Yeah, I think it wasdown around 100 bucks a pop, becuase I had considered just getting it when I bought m powerbook, but I wanted to save the extra 200 bucks.

Whats the difference between stacked ram and 'non stacked' ram? Stacked is less expensive, so what gives?

Huh?

Here in Japan, they're selling 512 RAM at ¥8000, which is $60... so I thought the prices were going WAY down....

Maybe the price increase is only in the US?

That's odd. 😕

not sure, but....

I think stacked means that it's all on one side vs. non-stacked with it distributed on both sides?

the major manufacturers of ram in taiwan have agreed to bring prices back up a little from their previously ridiculously low prices. we can't always expect a 512MB stick of ram to be 40-50 bux altho it was nice for a while. RAM is the most critical instant-gratification performance enhancer we have, and companies know this.

I do't know about stacked, I think it has to do with physical size:One being a row of chips larger as measured from the pins to the back of the card.

The one or two sided is defined in the name:
DIMMs typically have chips on both sides, SIMMs on only one. I think they break out as:

Dual Integrated Memory Module
and
Single Integrated Memory Module

But I'm not sure. That "I" may be "In-line".I don't remember what the "SO" in SODIMM stand for. If you can, get the "lower slot" RAM, it's more compact.

Thats a Rip-Off

I got well over 800mb of ram for $141 US over eBay.

512mb pc133 sdram = $55
256mb pc133 sdram = $31
128mb 168 dimm = $40
32mb 72 simm = $15

if you shop around, you can still get those prices. i paid under $5 for continental shipping over the border, and all ram worked perfectly.

believe me....I definitely know the power of online shopping on ebay...

but I also know there are lots of people who would feel more secure buying from a RAM vendor directly....there are a lot of people who don't know any better...

And in the UK too, RAM prices are still way down.

from computer warehouse, the price for 256RAM, branded, for Tibook is 49 english pounds, not sure what that works out at in US dollars. and you can get 512RAM for the powertowers at 10 quid more!

I just got 512Mb PC133 for £45, posted and next day delivery, from Crucial Memory (UK). They have international sites too - try www.crucial.com for your country (or nearest one!).

how is crucial RAM working out for u? I've read a ton of posts regarding problems with the 1 Gig outfits....curious to know how their 512's run alone...

Ooooh! Just checked out the Crucial website, and can't believe it...

Memory prices doubled in 2 weeks.

I'm lucky Christmas came when it did, or I'd be stuck with 256Mb until Hell froze over.
