Is there a smarter way of dealing with the different aspect ratio of iPhone and iPad?

At the moment I am using glOrthof to define game area. So I am keeping this constant.

I am then using glViewport to define the device screen. So I detect iPad or iPhone or iPhoneRetina and then set it to that devices screen resolution.

End result is slightly squashed X-axis. You can see what I mean in the youtube link in my signature - the settings cogs (top left) on the first screen look squashed on X axis.

Any bright ideas would be great.
