iPhoto crashes after software update: Terrified my pictures are gone

I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and just installed some software updates. Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error message: Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application.

If I delete iPhoto and reinstall it will I lose all my pictures and video? I have almost 1500 of my 5 month old daughter, very worried right now. I installed the latest update for iPhoto off the apple website but that didn't help. Here's the details of the error message I get, any help is GREATLY appreciated!

This time looks like it will be recoverable, once it is, buy an extra hard disk and let Time Machine do its thing.

You are absolutely right and I will have to back up everything asap when I get iPhoto working again.

Swiftaw: Thanks for the tip, all the pictures are there but wow, they are split up into tons of folders. May be a little cumbersome going through and copying all those files. (well worth it though)

So, just to make 100% sure, if I drag iPhoto to the trash and reinstall it I won't lose my pictures? Do you know if it will retain all the folders I had set up in iphoto? Man, I hope it does or this is a serious bug Mac needs to fix. Everything was working perfect till I installed that update.

Thanks again Swiftaw. Well, I drug iPhoto to the trash and reinstalled iPhoto again from the bundled software package on my iMac applications install DVD. I had software update check for updates and install those pertaining to iPhoto. Restart computer and same error message. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem."

Any ideas at this point? Sorry to be a pain, thanks again for your help.

Thanks again Swift. This is a nightmare. So I googled this problem and it said to trash all the iphoto pkg files so I did that. I also did like you said swift and tried to delete the plist iphoto files but they were missing so I'm assuming I got rid of them when I deleted the pkg files perhaps?

In any event, I've deleted iPhoto a couple times now (in the applications folder) and reinstalled from the DVD. Same error message. I also called apple support to see if they could help. I purchased this $2500 iMac one year and 2 months ago so no telephone support is available unless I pay $49 for the support. It's very frustrating that updating software causes this big of a headache.

Any other suggestions? I'm at a loss right now, thanks.
