need help external dvd on imac

Hi I have an imac g3 mac os 10.4.11 and am trying to use an AMACOM external dvd player to watch dvds, however when I switch it on nothing happens. also it has a red light on top, not sure if this should stay red or not. I tried putting a dvd and a cd in but still nothing happens, Help please.

no ti doesnt show up in finder or disk utility
