Google Earth for iOS Update Adds Support for KML Files

Google has updated its Google Earth iOS app with support for KML files to add custom maps and overlays to the earth. KML files exist for all sorts of different types of data, including real-time earthquake maps and airline flight tracking, or educational information about volcanos.
Quote:
One of the most powerful features of Google Earth is the ability to view custom maps or overlays, which are also commonly known as KML files. Ever since we introduced Google Earth on mobile devices, users have requested support for custom content. Today, we are proud to announce Google Earth 6.2 for Android and iOS, which includes support for KMLs. Now anywhere you find a "Google Earth file" (KML file) while you're browsing the mobile web, just click on the link and the Google Earth app will automatically launch and load the custom map.
Google Earth is a free download for iPhone and iPad from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Imagine how useful this would be if you could run Google Earth without a network connection...

I also noticed the map version has been updated to 2012.

The views look incredibly clean and clear on my new iPad. I've never seen it look this good in the past.

It's a real shame that isn't going to happen, soon.

Because that's all they'll show on the Google page, I suppose.

Know of good KML creator

Anyone know of a good KML creator and editor? I've done some searching and can't seem to find anything that really comes out ahead as being well done and supported.

i wish they would update the maps on iOS! When I had android the maps were amazing! If you click on a business on the maps it would let you call the business or even look at their info from google maps. iOS only lets you look at it and thats it lol

Google sketchup is one of the best, and generates kml files as an export format. In fact much of the 3d models in google earth was made with it. Two versions a free and pro, the pro isn't needed by most, though as an architect I do use the pro. Pro is only needed if you plan on importing autocad files or outputting hi-res jpg images.

I think the thought that it might bother me bothers you more than I care to bother about.

imagine another title, e.g. "Call of Duty out on Xbox today!" yet the picture was of the wii version (worse version).

Can't believe you are having trouble understanding this.

The difference here being that they are both identical, the only thing different is the different UI.

It'd be like an Xbox site showing a screenshot from a game, but somewhere on the screenshot would be "Press Triangle" or something from PS3.

And no it would not bother me.
