SSD for mini server...

Hi there,

I new to the Mac world and recently purchased a stock mini server and want to upgrade to a SSD and more memory.

I read somewhere that the i7 mini should use SATA 2 rather than SATA 3. Apparently, it performs better using SATA 2. I'm ready to order and don't know whether to go with 2 or 3.

This is a good resource site. Much appreciated!

Regards, Paul.

I'd be surprised if a SATA2 drive performed better. It would be limiting the SSD.

It would be limiting the sata 3 if he purchased the sata 3 and put it on a sata 2 interface.

Maybe what you heard is that SATA 2 SSD drives are more reliable than SATA 3 drives due to the hardware and firmware being more mature. It does not mean that all SATA 3 drives are bad but some might give you some problems. Personally I have a Crucial M4 (SATA 3 SSD) in my 2011 mid-range Mac Mini and I have no problems at all.

The 2011 Mac Minis have SATA 3 controllers

Forgive me if I'm wrong but the benefits of a SSD in a Mac Mini server are lost on me. Surely the biggest bottleneck in a server is going to be the ethernet link?

He could, not saying he is, be using it as a normal system; after all, it is the fastest mini.

He could be, but that much was obvious. If it's being used in a server capacity i'd be interested in the reason why.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147164

this is a case of the 256gb being a better deal.

here is a good 128gb from crucial

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148448

and a 256gb

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148449

in this case the 128gb is lower per gb

I have put these into mac mini servers 2011 models time and time again. they work fine.

I guess that says it all.

I'll be using it as a desktop, and some Photoshop.

I just got my V600 scanner working on the mini. I haven't been able to get it going on Windows 7 box.

Thank you for your help. Appreciated!

Paul.

Philip gave you some good choices, but I am using an OCZ Vertex 3 in my mini server and it works perfectly.

Your statement does not make sense without qualification. I would say that the biggest bottleneck will be the user when the computer has to wait for input.

Talk about being Anal, I'm right in that the ethernet is a weak link. Maybe you should find a better use for your time instead of being a troll!

The link weak to what? Your piece of advice had nothing to do with the original question and does not matter in terms of what the op wants to use the computer for. I would appreciate it if you could keep your teenage insults to yourself.

I don't pick what I have not tried. Years ago ocz caused me a lot of grief with bad ssd's. Purchased 2,

1 was bad and it fried my minis mobo. That was bad enough but 7 week wait for a replacement was the icing on the cake. This happened in 2008 maybe 2009. Last week I finally made a purchase from them again a psu from newegg. So far it works.

Thanks for the useful links! I'm using Mushkin Cronos 240 gb in my Windoze box, and it's terrific.
