Do not update crucial m4's firmware to 000F

I updated the crucial m4 512gb firmware from 0309 to 000f and now I get a lot beach balls and system freezes. :(
My m4 was working perfectly with 0309 firmware.

I have macbook pro 13" early 2011 model. In crucial forums there is atleast one person currently having the same problem after updating with similar macbook pro.

Updated mine and I don't have any beachballs or freezes :)
Do a repair permissions and see if that helps.

Tried reinstall the OS > same problem
Pram NVRam reset > same problem
repair disk > same problem
repair disk permissions > same problem

Tried also some hack that worked last year (Peter's no bachball fix) > same problem

However, I haven't tried reupdating the firmware using the same live cd update.

Negativezero & itegypt: did you use windows updater or live cd? What are the specs of your m4?
 
Updated a Crucial M4 512GB earlier today, from 0309 to new 000F firmware.
Burnt the firmware ISO to a DVD+RW disc and booted from internal SuperDrive.
Running in a MacBook Pro (Late 2006) with SATA 1.

No issues at all so far.
Surprising since it's Friday 13th :eek: ;)
 
Back to 0309. Smooth sailing now.:cool:

No 000f update for me ever again.
 
You could also tried an SMC reset first but whatever works for you.

Also updated to 000f and have had zero issues.

I'm quite happy now when I'm back to 0309. I do not want to have extremely high blood pressure anymore or spend lot of my time because it's working perfectly with 0309. :cool:

Maybe I upgrade to next firmware that will be released after 000f, but before that I check all the comments online and wait atleast two weeks before firmware update.
 
For those that did upgrade - any difference?

Like someone else said hard to argue with perfection but as I see one of the fixes in this release is safer recovery from unexpected shutdown/power off I am tempted to upgrade. On my 15" MBP I never had hibernate working correctly so I disabled it - but this means if I put the computer to sleep without having enough charge I do risk losing whatever I was working on before sleeping it.

It's not a big deal (I shutdown when I know I'm not going to touch it for a few days) but a little safety is always good.

So for those that did upgrade - any improvements noticed yet?
 
I plan to buy an M4 for my 2008 macbook white so I’ll certainly take this into consideration. Although chances are when I buy it it'll come with the new firmware so hopefully it’s okay.
 
Ironically I've been having beachball issues for the past two days with my m4 on 0009. I was reading about some ~5400 op hour bug and beachballing and that's about how long I've been running mine in my Mac pro 4,1. I updated to 000F just now, will report back if this fixes my beachball issue.
 
Its been a week since i updated and mine hasn't so much as blinked since installation.

Update:

The 000F firmware appears to have resolved my random beachballing issue. Per documentation on Crucial's website, I'm sure this was the issue with my drive (as I was still on 0009 instead of 0309):


  • Correct a condition where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time. The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point. The condition will allow the end user to successfully update firmware, and poses no risk to user or system data stored on the drive.

My computer has been running for ~18 hours without a crash now, glad to have my rock solid machine back :). Credit to this thread for making me think about testing the SSD.
 
since updating my firmware to 000F, my computer has been freezing as well.. but only when Time Machine is on and set to run automatically. It'll maybe freeze after 5 hours or so (5 backups). However, turning off time machine and telling it to back up manually doesn't make it freeze. Just thought I'd throw this info out there.. not sure if it's related to the firmware being updated or not.

FWIW, I'm on 000F and am having no issues with Time Machine and crashing. Perhaps there's something going on with your Time Machine drive?

you are correct. I figured out why my laptop was freezing and it had nothing to do with the SSD or its firmware version.
 
I'm having this exact problem! My M4 came with 0309 and it worked fine but once I tried to update it to 000F I will get stuck at the boot screen for about 15 mins before it boots into the OS.

I used SuperDuper! to clone my drive. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but 0309 works fine so far.

I'm on a MBP early 2011.
