Mail keeps rejecting my password
I keep getting this message form my mail, "The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user "email.net".
I have the correct password in my keychains, and whenever I get this I enter the correct password. What am I missing? |

Delete the Keychain entry, then when the message pops up, enter your password, and check to remember it in Keychain.

Yahoo is the one email account that seems really unreliable on my MacBook.
Why is this? Anyone else think the same?

Questions:
What port are you using for your outgoing (SMTP) server? Is it by any chance port 25? Are you by any chance using att or a service provider that "blocks" mail sent on port 25? When I switched to ATT "Uverse" (from att dsl), I began experiencing all sorts of problems when attempting to send mail, usually accompanied by the alert that my password was rejected by the "incoming" (SMTP) server. I tried using other ports, but for some reason, was never able to get my version of Mail.app (2.1) to "agree" with the "alternative server setups". I was finally able to get tech support at ATT Uverse to "UNblock" my port 25. Then the password problems while sending mail immediately cleared up. I have no hard proof, but I sense that something within the Apple Mail.app (at least older versions), or the way older versions of Mail.app and Keychain work together is "locked on" port 25. Even when you designate a different port for outgoing email, something is still "touching" the port 25, and because it is "blocked by default" by some service providers, you will get the error alert thrown back at you. Just my experience... |

I think it's a problem with Mail, I get exactly the same issue with my iCloud Email address, and have read in multiple places about this bug. It happens on Lion as well as iOS 5/5.1 and there seems to be no way of fixing it, it's incredibly annoying.

if it happen with iCloud, just close mail app and re-open. This fixed it for me.

Not a bug in the OS. I believe it has more so to do with the serverfarm being overtaxed

---------- You're right, it's a server problem but surely it must have been fixed by now….I have been having this issue since iCloud came out on a regular basis...

Yup. An annoying bug no doubt but it's better than filling your password every time.

The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user
I have recently bought an iMac and had the same problem with Apple Mail rejecting my (correct) email password from day 1. I saw advice on a BT forum to reduce email password length, the suggestion being that Apple Mail client was occasionaly truncating long passwords. I don't know if that is the case BUT...
I changed my password from 13 characters to the minimum 8 required by Yahoo and my email has been working fine for three days. Hope this helps (and works for you). |

That advice was wrong. Apple Mail does not truncate a 13 character password. It can handle passwords much longer than that. A mail server may place restrictions on password length, but Apple's Mail.app doesn't.

I've been in contact with Yahoo support for over a month. They simply do not have a clue as to how to solve this problem. It doesn't matter if you delete all keychain entries, or if you delete and recreate the account. Using the new control panel function in Lion to create a new mail account won´t work since the password isn't recognized. If you create the account from within Apple´s mail app you can deliberately type the wrong password and then continue and change it on the next screen. But at best that will help you to activate the account. It will inevitably go back to asking you for your password again and it will not accept it. I pay for the premiums service and I really don´t know if I should laugh or cry at Yahoo support’s incompetence. It is appalling. Maybe we should get together and see if a class action suit will help them get their you know what together.
I sent my first mail to their support on May 7. Today, five or six mails later I received this answer: ”You've reached the highest level of support. I sincerely apologize for the continued difficulties you are experiencing with your Yahoo! Mail account and for you having to take the time to write in again about the same issue. I've looked into your case and found that our Engineering Team is still investigating this particular issue. Unfortunately at this time, I do not have more information for you or a work-around to try as a temporary solution. We will continue to investigate until we are able to identify the cause.” One month to get IMAP mail to work... |

I've since just taken the account offline and only enable it to check mail manually. Miraculously, with Mail running my MBP now shuts down immediately with the Yahoo account disabled. It used to take up to a minute for Mail to quit when the Yahoo account was enabled.

any progress?
hi,
has there been any progress on this problem? I'm experiencing the same issue since a few days and it is very strange, because on both my Imac and my MacBook the imap yahoo-mail account doesn't work, but on my iphone it works fine. It started last week when I had to change my password because of a security issue (my account started to send out spam). Also the yahoo-mail website acts differently than i remember when logging in, with having to type in several verification captchas etc. and then it shows that i'm logged in, but still the login-window is showed and not the in-box... i can check my mails however over a few detours, but cannot get into my account-information to rechange my password... I tried deleting my account on mac mail and setting it up again, but it doesn't even accept the password while setting up the account, even though it is correct and works fine on iphone... Does anybody else have these issues? |
