Ejecting is not an option I guess?
Normally external disk go to sleep themselves, but sometimes it does not works as set (System Preferences > Energy Saver).

I have an external firewire 800 and when wake from sleep i have to wait 10secs with spinning beachball is really annoying when you use to in a SSD RAID
