Chronic Dev Team today announced the release of Absinthe 2.0, which offers users the ability to jailbreak numerous iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1, including the third-generation iPad, without having to tether the device to a computer for booting. The jailbreaking process allows users to load third-party software and hacks not authorized by Apple onto their devices.

Absinthe 2.0 works only on iOS 5.1.1, and enables jailbreaking of all iPad models with the exception of the revised 16 GB iPad 2, although compatibility with that device is scheduled to be added in the future. On the iPhone side, Absinthe 2.0 can jailbreak all devices from the iPhone 3GS onward, while the software is also compatible with the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch models.

Absinthe 2.0 is available for OS X (Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion), Windows (XP, Vista, and 7), and Linux. Users who have already jailbroken their iOS 5.1.1 devices using tethered options available prior to today can untether their devices using the Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether package available through Cydia.

The release comes from the same partnership of Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team that released Absinthe A5 earlier this year to offer the first untethered jailbreak of iOS devices based on Apple's A5 system-on-a-chip, which included the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Update: The Dev Teams have already pushed out version 2.0.1 to address an issue with hanging. New direct download links include:

- OS X (Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion)
- Windows (XP, Vista, and 7)
- Linux

I'm sure this gets asked every time there's a new jailbreak story, but what are some of the current benefits to jailbreaking?

The only one I think I'd be interested in is the quick-reply SMS feature that allows you to reply to a text without leaving an app. It'd be great if Apple implemented that, because I don't think I'm gonna bother jail breaking just for that.

But what else is there?

I haven't Jailbroken my iPhone since the 3G, maybe 3Gs.

What are the reasons to jailbreak now? You get the apps for free, you can tether 3G to your laptop/iPad right? Anything else new that's happened in the last couple years?

Back then I seem to remember it being an issue. Glitchy, and always worried about the new software updates. Then again those software updates always seemed to bring out new "features" in some sense.

Appreciate any update on the whole jailbreak experience.

Is this working for anyone?

wipe your iDevice and leave it empty than jailbreak before restoring from backup. seems to spill out errors otherwise. worked fine on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 wifi

FINALLY i can get my Notification Center Widgets and live weather icon back :D

But what else is there?

Notification Center Widgets
Live Weather Icon
Icons in the Status Bar
Fold to unlock (SWEET)
better Multitasking etc

Looks like we posted the same question at about the same time. Weird that our usernames are similar too!

time to JB my new iPad. I'm not in to JBing anymore but I will this time just for the Pandora Radio Skip app.

other than that I have no need to.

Did that damn it but still no luck. Commenters on the verge are also having problems.

This doesn't work if your device is already uses a tethered jailbreak.

is there a working siri port for this? im currently using spire but won't upgrade unless i know i can keep siri.

Thanks pod2G and MuscleNerd. Will throw a twenty in the kitty. Is greenpois0n.com the best place to make a donation?

Wow, I gotta try that, just for those features:

Let's see:

Notifications. (ios does that)
Icons in the status bar (Press twice and that comes up in ios)
For weather I actually look outside
What is better multitasking?

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I do one thing at a time. Has served me well over the years.

It's really hard to swipe, point, drag and click with a finger and occasionally push the home button.

Damn Apple forces us to work out unnecessarily!

  • Facetime over 3G
  • Pandora Unlimited Skip
  • Use any app inplace of camera app on unlock screen
  • Notification tweaks
  • iFile file management
  • Emulators

I'm sure there are others but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
