Can't update any software

I have a Macbook Air, bought six months ago - running OS X 10.7.2. I can't do any software updates - I don't think I've been able to do any since I bought the computer. Every time I try (either because I am prompted or - as today - because I clicked on the software update link) I download the things to update, then when I tell it to update and reboot, I get "unexpected error occurred. No updates installed."

I just read a bit on this forum, and then found what appears to be the crash report log from this morning's attempt. I tried to update twice this morning - first in response to a prompt, and then by clicking on the software update link. I've copied below all the log entries for this morning that I got when I searched for "software update."

Can anyone interpret this and explain the problem? Do I need to show other items from the crash log? There were lots of other items in the log for this morning, I don't know what else might help interpret the problem.

You might try downloading the combo update here for 10.7.4. That downloads the entire update package outside of the software update mechanism and sometimes fixes problems like you are having.

Just save the download then afterwards click to install it.
 
Thanks. I followed your suggestion and installed the combined version of OS X 10.7.4. That seemed to work okay - it told me it was installed properly, rebooted my computer, etc.

Then I clicked on "software updates" and it found some, so I downloaded them and installed them. This time I got an error that some of the new things didn't install, "unexpected error occurred." I don't know which ones didn't work - it was trying to install iTunes and Safari and I'm not sure what else.

Does anyone know what is wrong? Do I need to provide different information for someone to diagnose this problem?
 
The tail end of that log looks like a problem with Airport Utility. You might try a manual install of that also. You can get it here.

Beyond, that all I can think of is somehow the core software updater library is corrupted and a reinstall of Lion should fix it.

Just boot to Lion recovery mode and redownload and install Lion. Make sure you backup first just to be safe, but a Lion reinstall (without formatting with Disk Utility) will not wipe your data.

This one is odd. I just checked on my Lion installation and I do not have that file on my system. Did you install some sort of external drive management software or something from Seagate that is maybe causing problems?
 
I have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive. It's the kind that can be used by both PC and Mac. I bought it when I bought the Mac, so I could transfer all my data from my old computer (PC) to the new one. I didn't set it up to do automatic backups from the Mac, since if I had I would not have been able to copy files onto it from the PC and off of it onto the Mac.

I now use it as my backup drive (copy my data files onto it) and I store movies and other big things on it, since the MacBook Air hard disk is too small for those things.
 
Did you in tall any Seagate software since you got the drive? From this post in the Seagate forums it looks like people are having trouble on Macs with that software.

You should be able to run that external drive with nothing installed from Seagate.

Also, you might try starting once in Safe Mode then restart to normal mode. Sometimes that will fix problems.

I have Airport Util 6.0 running on Lion 10.7.4 and it installed with no problems.

He seems to have trouble installing any updates at all.
 
I have some Seagate diagnostics installed on my computer - I don't think I've ever used them. I had a lot of trouble getting the Seagate drive to work with both computers - I don't remember how I ended up getting it to work.

I don't know what Airport Utility even is, though I gather it has something to do with wifi. I use wifi all the time, but I don't print over wifi. I have two wifi-enabled printers, and I can't get them to work via wifi. I actually had one of them installed and working via wifi for a short time, but then that stopped working and kept losing its settings, so I gave up and I just use my printers with a cable. I had to reinstall the printers a number of times before they worked reliably, and they never worked reliably over wifi.

I also had a problem that may have occurred at the same time and is conceivably related. Unfortunately I don't really know what happened. I was having trouble with something, possibly my attempts to get the computer to talk to the printers over the wifi, and I thought I'd just reboot the computer. Then it wouldn't start again at all. This was shortly after I bought, and I knew even less about Macs than I do now (this is my first Mac, I've had around a dozen PCs over the years). It would turn on and the gear that is supposed to appear on the screen wouldn't appear. Of course I couldn't access any of the information about how to boot up in other modes, since Macs don't come with paper operating manuals, only ones on the hard disk, and the computer wouldn't go on. I phoned Apple and they talked me through many steps to sort this out and get the computer working again. Unfortunately I don't really know what happened or how they got me past that problem, since I had no idea what was going on.

I have not been able to update any software since then - but I'm not sure that I could before that, either. The computer was only around a month old at that point, so I didn't need to update anything.

I assume that the inability to print wirelessly is somehow related to my inability to install Airport Utility. But I don't know why that would make me unable to update any software at all.

Does any of this add any useful information to figuring out why I can't update any of my software?

Is there a way to figure out which software is not updating? I found a folder earlier that appeared to contain info about what didn't update (that was before loading OS X 10.7.4), but the contents were hidden and I didn't remember how to unhide them (I had figured that out back when my computer wouldn't boot up at all). Now I can't find that folder at all. If I could find it and unhide it, might that be useful? Would someone know where that folder should be? And might you be able to remind me how to unhide things, so I could see what's there?

I'm fishing for suggestions here - hoping some of this might suggest things to those of you who know more about this than I do. I appreciate your help!
 
In that case, I would suggest to run the an Apple store and tell that same story to the Apple guy.
 
From user posts it looks like that Seagate software has caused others problems. Use the link I posted to remove it then do the safe mode boot also.

Airport Utility is used to manage Apple routers like the Airport Extreme or the Time Capsule.
 
Thanks, Weaselboy. If I uninstall the Seagate diagnostics, do you think my Mac will still be able to read my external hard drive?

(If not, then I can't uninstall until I figure out some way to access the information that's on the external drive. Neither the Mac hard drive nor the hard drive of my old PC is nearly big enough to back up the files now on the external drive.)
 
I'm really hoping I don't have to reinstall everything and start from scratch. It would be a seriously major hassle! Very time consuming.

In case I do, can I simply copy things from the applications folder onto my backup, and then copy them back? I assume not - but figuring out how to reinstall the software on my computer would be a pain! It was a pain in the neck the first time, since I was going from PC to Mac, I really don't want to go through that again.

not really, especially if you have 2 usb sticks, one with the Lion Recovery Disk on it and the other with your Hardware specific Lion Installer on it

mostly, no you can't; yet with a few you can.
I have all my Apps backed up as .dmg files so it's a fairly quick process.
and as they say, practise makes perfect

the entire process for me is 1 to 2 hours and you have a fast conflict free Mac ;)

your Mac should read any external drive on it's own without the need for other drivers.
Disk Utility is your friend when it comes to any issues with drives - either external or internal - and indeed you would also use it to erase either.

Yes. It will work fine without that software.

If you just reinstall Lion it will likely fix this and you will not have to reinstall anything.

Try getting rid of the Seagate software first.
 
The logs you posted point to an authorisation problem. Somewhere along the line your system permissions got messed up (possibly when you installed the seagate software) so I don't think removing it will just revert everything back to normal. I would remove the seagate software first (there are tutorials on how to do this completely), then I would try running repair permissions in disk utility. Or you could try this first and see if software update works. If that does not work, then the best thing to do would be to reinstall, because the problems you are seeing are certainly not normal.

I removed all the Seagate files and rebooted. As Weaselboy said, I can still read my external drive - whew!

Then I checked for software updates - there were six. This time I had the sense to look at the details on them instead of simply hitting "install." So I installed them one at a time. Five of them worked (printer drivers, some camera thing, iTunes, Safari, and a fifth that I'm not remembering).

AirPort Utility still didn't work.

Then I went to disk utility and repaired disk permissions. Got the following messages in the process (in case it matters):

Tried to install AirPort Utility again, it still doesn't work.

Weird - but at least I could update everything else, the problem is now limited to AirPort Utility. Progress!

Oh, and I am now getting an error saying that "Pen Tablet.kext" is not usable, and I should find a current version or reload it. I got that when I did the software updates. I assume that's a file related to my Bamboo pen tablet. The tablet is working fine.

That wouldn't be causing the AirPort Utility installation problems, would it? It seems irrelevant to me, but what do I know?

Thta sounds like you need to update the drivers for the Bamboo tablet. See if they have new drivers on their website. It would have nothing to do with ther Airport Util issue. Do you have an Apple router? If not you do not need the Airport Utility anyway.

You might try going into the Applications/utilities folder and deleting Airport Util then do a manual install of it from the link I gave you.

It does sound like that Seagate software was the main source of the problem though.

Yes, I've already checked for new drivers for the Bamboo tablet (and there are new ones).

I don't have an Apple router, so it looks like I can live without the AirPort utility. I will try deleting it and then see if I can install a new version, but it's not urgent.

Thank you for all your help - weaselboy and everyone else who made suggestions! I was getting concerned when it seemed like I couldn't update anything. I'm very glad that problem seems to be resolved!
