delete .dat files

I have a million .dat files on my laptop and one of them keeps coming up as an error in disk utility.

what are .dat files and is there any harm in deleting them?

thanks for any advice.

.dat is a generic extension that many applications use. it means "data".

Posting the name of the file with the error and the error messages that Disk Utility is giving you would help you get help for your issue.
