iCloud between iPhone and Mac?

OK so I have a Mac running Lion 10.7.4 and an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1.1.

I have Numbers and Pages installed on both my Mac and iPhone and enabled iCloud on both devices too.

My question is, should the documents created on each device sync to both devices or only to iCloud?

I was under the impression the documents would sync between both devices?
