i just bought a 16gb ipod nano. i have 20gb of music. i have wanted it to be on automatic sync, but had only checked the songs i wanted expecting itunes to only sync them, but it started syncing everything. it said that there wasn't enough space, but i left it. it completely filled up my ipod. i then checked sync checked songs only, and pressed sync. it didn't do anything. i unplugged and tried again. nothing. kept the songs the same. i did a restore of my ipod, and started over. it did the same thing and started syncing everything, only this time i cancelled the sync. can that mess up anything? or can restoring a new nano mess it up?

Sounds like it already is messed up so you have nothing to lose by restoring. Restoring can't damage a correctly working device.
