My daughter still uses her 2010 MacBook (the last of the white unibodies). It is in the stock configuration and has a 2.4 Core2Duo processor, 2gb RAM and 250gb HDD. She only uses about 30gb of space on the drive.

I'd like to get her a little more speed for a modest cost and have decided on 2 options.

A.) Get her a SSD drive. 64gb would do for sure, but the 128gb units are a good value right now.

B.) Sell the 2010 MacBook and get her a 2011 11" base MacBook Air. I figure that swap would cost me about the same bump as the SSD drive. I think the smaller display is no issue and the MBA is more portable. Faster processor, same RAM, but only 64gb storage. I think that amount is still ok for her, but of course I'd be locked in.

Of these two, and only these two, which is better...A or B?

personally, I would do the SSD option. Just seems to make more sense.

Yes, that is definitely the easiest option and may be the route I go. My other thought of a benefit of going with a 2011 Air is that from the Apple refurb site, it would carry a 1-year warranty from Apple. The white MacBook has recently expired.

I have the 2010 Macbook with a 128 SSD. I love it. It is fairly current technology but more unique than all of the aluminum Macbook Pro's and Air's. I have also put a 500 GB drive in an Opti-bay for more storage. My son tried to give me his 13" Pro when we upgraded his to a 15" Pro. I just preferred the White Unibody.

Sounds like the SSD may be the better/easier option. I'll have to keep a lookout for a great deal on one. Thanks!

It's gotta get tight with only 2GB of RAM - you should be able to get 4GB for $30-$35 (probably cheaper used, like $15-$20, plenty of 2x2GB chips laying around from people that upgraded to 8GB)

I'd do that, and the 128GB SSD :) Pick one up on Slickdeals for $75-$90 when one comes up

I agree with this, I'd upgrade the RAM to 4GB, stick a 128GB SSD in it and upgrade to Mountain Lion when it's released. It'll feel like a brand new Mac then!
