My situation: I keep all my photos and Lightroom library on an external Firewire 800 drive with FW 800 backup drives.

I just purchase the new Macbook Pro Retina and you all know that a Firewire 800 port no longer exists.

For my working photo catalog I will use a portable USB 3 drive that doesn't require a power cord (bus powered).

However, I would like to continue to use my Firewire 800 drives for backups.

What would be the most convenient or affordable option?

Is there a FW 800 to USB 3 adapter? If so I haven't found too many.

Anything thunderbolt seems ridiculously expensive at this time.

Thanks. I just found an article mentioning that.

When the MBP R arrives I can just use the USB for backups even though they'll be USB2.

Hopefully the adapter will be affordably priced.

The Apple site mentions that in the MBPR specs:

I doubt it will be expensive.

The Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter, which was announced alongside the Firewire 800 adapter, is $29. I would expect the Firewire adapter to be similarly priced.
