Hey guys!

I would like to upgrade my MAC MINI Server 2011 to and ssd but I've been out of the loop on SSD read and write speeds. Is there forum post or online guide that breaks down different ssd brands? Or, please post here with personal recommendations and specs!

THANK YOU!

2011 mac mini can use sata III

samsung series 830 and crucial m4 are very reliable.

speeds of 400 to 500mbs can be achieved in long write ands reads.

those numbers are not that important unless you have 2 ssds.

and you clone a lot. the reason is simple if you have 1 ssd and 1 hdd long clones and copies are limited to the hdds speed. I have owned more then 40 different makes and models of ssds. samsung crucial and intel are good. try to get 180gb to 256gb size (fastest in general) here are links for one to buy.

You might want to check out OWC at http://www.macsales.com I haven't tested them out, but they look like cheaper SSDs than what apple offers with the same quality.

EDIT: HOLY COW, Didn't see that. OWC, not OCZ

I just put the Samsung 830 into my 2011 Mini Server, and it’s a really nice piece of kit, the performance has increased no end in certain tasks, highly recommended.
The Samsung pack I brought had a little USB to SATA cable in that was great for using CCC from the HDD to SSD before installing, then it was just a case of swap drives and boot up. :D
BTW I managed to do mine without unplugging either the Fan, IR sensor or antenna cable, so it saved the fear of damaged connectors or wires being pulled out.

i just ordered the 120gb OWC 6g extreme SSD that comes with the usb enclosure and the tool kit - hoping the procedure is relatively painless. i'm thinking that hooking up the SSD via USB and cloning the drive with CCC (i only have my apps on my internal mini drive so 120gb should be ok), then doing the swap, ultimately using the usb enclosure for the old internal drive when it's all finished.

just installed my OWC 120gb into my 2.5 ghz 2011 mini. i'm getting 400+ read speeds, but maxing out at 135 write speeds. this is with the blackmagic benchmark speed reader. is this normal?

update - with Xbench i can get write times up in the mid 200s.

just wanted to let you guys know something i just experienced and resolved - i had heard about how SSD's made booting up lightning fast, but it actually seemed slower to me after my SSD upgrade. i checked the preference pane and there was a question mark over the SSD, so i selected it as the boot up disk and now rebooting is insanely fast, it's an almost nonexistent wait. what's strange is that there is still a question mark over the startup disk icon in perferenced, but it definitely knows to boot from the SSD now and the change in speed made the surgery i had to perform on the mini (it was harder for me that the youtube videos suggested) well well worth it.
