External with macbook pro retina

Hello there,

Quick question, I have a 2011 iMac I want to use as an external for the macbook pro retina, can I use the imac's I/O (USB, Ethernet, etc) just like I would on an apple cinema display? or is it limited to only the display?

I believe it's limited to the display.
