A curious development:

Over the past week or so, I've been getting app store popups when visiting websites. Not the annoying Tapatalk ones, but something that launches the AppStore with a preset app selection. In my case it was some slot machine game.

I'm wondering if any of the advertiser networks are experimenting with this and if anyone else has seen these. I've had them happen on a one-per day frequency, the last one this morning after browsing here then going over to drudge.

Now for further info: it's an non-jailbroken iPad running a beta OS, and I'm a developer. Happened over WiFi and 4G.

I assume that these sites generate popups with iTunes Store URL's.
I have not seen one myself though. Care to tell an example website?

I'm pretty sure that's how it's done. I said what I did that generated one. It could also be a misbehaving app in the background too. Though I have never seen the iPad with the app store active when picking it up. It only happens while browsing, and at a frequency of once per day.

Just happened again.

Went to drudgereport.com and it launched the app store pimping Slotsjourney HD.

It does not do it every time, so you may have to clear cookies.

Yup, clearing cookies makes it happen. I'm trying to get the URL

kissmyads.com is responsible for the app store popup spam.

I've been having the same thing. The only link I had open was an imgur page; I emailed the developers who said that they'd received another complaint and were looking into it. The link is somehow being requested through advertising on the page.

SlotsJourney HD for me too.

I just went straight to Apple and reported it. Let them know the ad network and the developer/app responsible.

Now I know Apple can't do anything about the ad network, but they can put the screws to the developer who will then take it out on the ad network.

EDIT:
Well Apple actually wrote back and is investigating.
