Is it possible to mount and unmount an optibay harddrive like an external drive? I'm thinking about buying one but won't need the second hdd mounted permanently

If you want to unmount it, you have to physically unmount it.
Open the MBP back lid, unscrew optibay, then unscrew the HDD/SSD out of it.
This process will take at least 10~15min.

But just unmounting it a bit, just drag it to your trash can.
However, mounting would be a bit hard. I think you need disk utility.

No point in starting Disk Utility for unmounting. Just select the volume and hit cmd-E or drag it onto the Trash icon.

For mounting, however, you'll need Disk Utility or something similar.

Because the 2nd hard drive acts similar to an external, you can simply "eject" the drive from finder or from your desktop if it shows up on there. However to remount, yes i believe you would have to use disk utility.
