New comer: Super-tele Lens, 800mm, with fixed focal length - 12 Jul 2012

Nikon is doing an 800mm F/5.6G super-telephoto prime lens. No release date announced yet. It is seen below with the D4.

It looks a lot smaller than I'd expected. Hopefully it will be as good as the Canon one which delivers quite superb results. I won't be purchasing one as I don't need such a mammoth lens, but I'd certainly be interested to try one out when they become available.

Impressive. It's thinner and probably lighter than its Canon counterpart. I noticed however that it's a little soft compared to the Canon. Maybe it's the ISO?

I think it probably is the ISO. This isn't the final production lens either.

I hope I will get to test one of them closer to launch. I've seen the results from the Canon 800mm F/5.6L which are very sharp, but those were in bright daylight conditions using only ISO200 or so on the EOS1D Mark IV.

I'd like to see the results of the new 800mm on the D800e. That is generally a superb combination for long-distance photography.

I'd be interested in seeing a side-by-side comparison of this and a new 400/2.8 with a TC-20EIII, since the 20EIII is the first 2x TC with good enough image quality that I'm considering purchasing one. I also wonder how it will fare with a my 400/2.8 with the new TC. Depending on rental costs, I may have to do a test.

Wherever my feet take me…
Anyone know if it comes in a Sony/Konica A-mount or if there's an adaptor? I have a Sony Alpha 65. I doubt I'll be able to afford one of these lenses, but would be nice to test out.

Minolta has a 44.5mm flange distance while the F mount has a 46.5mm distance, so I think there's an adapter for it somewhere.

EDIT: here you go: http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Lens-Mount-Adapter-Minolta/dp/B0048A6VS8

EDIT 2: It has an optical element because although the flange distance allows for a converter, the mount's physical specifications do not allow for a glassless adapter.
