So I have it plugged to the computer and I beileve its charging as I see the display says "Connected" and I see the electric bolt on the battery symbol top right. My question is, while its charging I cant listen to it or navigate to the home screen somehow? If so, how because I cant see to get out of the "connected" screen.

Are you on a Mac? If so, the iPod is probably mounted on the desktop or iTunes is open. Ether way, eject the iPod and your nano's home screen should appear.
