I just picked up an Apple TV the other day and was wondering what use a micro USB cord has with the Apple TV? I was just wondering if it is needed. Thank you!

Odds are you will not need to make use of the micro USB port with your Apple TV. It is there in the event that you need to do a complete restore through iTunes, thus needing the micro USB cord to connect the Apple TV directly to your computer.
