My bf recorded a video on his phone (android) and I was not able to switch it over to imovie. When I drag it over it won't accept it. Someone said I needed to switch it over to something else then to imovie and it'll work. Switch it to what though??

Check this out. I use a different way to convert mp4 for import into iMovie, but this link should help you understand why it does not work sometimes and will give you the solution. http://www.bigasoft.com/articles/how-to-import-mp4-into-imovie.html. Quicktime Player 7 Pro will also convert them for you.

Is the Bigasoft iMovie Converter free? I see where it says download for free, then at the bottom it says, Buy Bigasoft Imovie converter for mac.
No, it's $35.
However, MPEGStreamclip is free and should do what you need. Open/view your video with it and then Export To Quicktime, and use the Apple Intermediate Codec option as this is what iMovie would convert your mp4 to if it could.
