Which iPhone 3GS's are safe for baseband flashing?

Although Apple started making pretty much all iPhones 3gs with the new type of baseband chip only after '11 39th week, there are some reports of earlier models with it.

My iPhone 3GS 8GB was made on '10 38th week and my gf's on '10 39th. Do you think it is safe to flash the baseband for both of them?

Serial 88128xxx (for example)

First two digits are the factory which made the phone
Third digit is year (2011 in this case) (8 = 2008, 9 =2009, 0 = 2010, 2=2012)
Fourth & fifth digit is the week (28th week)

Any phone made on the 28th week or after of 2011 can be destroyed by flashing the iPad baseband

88039 and xx038. Well, the phones were made nearly a year before the upgrade, but some say even some early models have the upgraded chips. Do you think mine are safe?

I do not argue about that.

The question is whether phones made some 10montha earlier than 11 28th are also prone to this problem. Some say apple started installing updated chips earlier as well.

No, earlier models dont have the fixed bootrom.
Later than 2011 28th week yes, not before.
And with yours both 10 months before that hardware upgrade I wouldnt worry about it.
You're safe.

Companies normally do field testing well upfront by, for example, running one production line with upgraded parts a while before the complete switching. For example Opel used to test their electronics even some 2 yrs before introduction- I wanted to make sure Apple wasn't doing the same.

Apple is obsessive about not allowing prototype/test units out to the general public.

Regardless of your claim that "some say", there are no iPhone 3GS units which were made in 2010 that were produced using the Toshiba bb chip which is resistant to being flashed to the iPad baseband.
It didn't happen.

if you flash the baseband you'll loose GPS functionality, if its an ATT phone you can officially unlock it from ATT, applenberry or something
