Online multiplayer games for Mac?

I'm wondering what are some good online multiplayer games that you can play on Mac (and that are not deserted).

The only one that comes to my mind is Driver: San Francisco.

http://youtu.be/qy6p_7wfSBM?t=2m58s

Also, note that I'm looking for games where you are actually in control of something (person, vehicle, whatever). I've seen some multiplayer games in the App Store that were not "direct". I'm not sure how to explain, but basically it was this game with Apes and you had to push buttons and then they'd do random stuff. Whatever. I don't mind games like Uno however, love playing this on the iPhone.

Other games were "online" too, but only with leaderboards and such things.

I've often seen lists about online multiplayer games for Mac, but weirdly enough, Driver: San Francisco was never listed. That tells me I can't take those lists seriously and there's probably more games that aren't featured in there.

So, if anyone knows. Let me know.

What genres are you interested in? For shooters, there are several Call of Duty games and Team Fortress 2 among others. You have real-time strategy, such as Starcraft 2; battle arena games like DOTA.

All depends on the type of game you're looking to play.

Anything really, as long as it's fun.
Some of my favourites would be Driver: San Francisco (Mac), Doodle Jump (iPhone) or UNO (iPhone) which are all three completely different.

What's important to me, however, is that it's actually a real-time online game. There's a good game out there called Far Out Racing, basically you have a map, you place coins, and you have to collect these coins with a car. You can place them anywhere and you can make it really hard to reach the coins. Then, players from all around the world play your map and have to get those coins. The one who beats the record wins money I believe, which he can invest in faster vehicles or objects/tools to make more complex maps.

The point is, that this would be an online game that isn't in real time. Although it was plenty of fun
(well, you could even see other players at some point -> the ghost car, driving down your map haha)

Well, "fun" means different things to different people. I personally like FPS games, but can't stand strategy or MOBA (DOTA 2, League of Legends).

Well, with fun I mean that there's non-stop action Is there any online multiplayer games for Mac at all except the few we already mentioned?

I was sure there would be some games that aren't pushed that much in the medias (like Driver: San Francisco), but which are still "high quality". Hell sometimes I wish there was games like Doodle Jump or Temple Run (not really online) on the Mac. Where does the Mac don't have such big "hit" games? It would be just as fun to play them on the Mac.

All the games I've mentioned are "hits" in the sense that they have substantial player bases, at least on the PC side of things. More often than not, games will not see a OS X release until months, sometimes years after their Windows counterparts.

Blizzard titles, including Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Diablo III all are multiplayer and all are/were available for the Mac at launch. Borderlands and Borderlands 2 took a couple months to come out for the Mac, and they're both solid co-op shooters. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 3 have been out for years and were only ported to the Mac in the last couple weeks.

Since you're being so vague, the only thing I can suggest is to try out the games for yourself. Some are free to play. Most of the others will get discounted on Steam at least a few times a year, sometimes as much as 75-80%.

For ones that don't typically go on sale, head over to Youtube and check out gameplay footage to see if it's something that might interest you.

FPS:
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2004
Call of Duty (many versions)
Quake (many versions)
Team Fortress 2

MMORPG:
World Of Warcraft

RPG:
Diablo 3
Torchlight

Driving:
Dirt 2 (never tried multiplayer though)

MOBA:
League of Legends
DOTA 2
Heroes of the Storm

RTS:
Starcraft: Brood War
Starcraft 2
Warcraft 3

Make your pick, search some gameplay on Youtube to get an idea.

Yeah those lists are good, cheers.

I'm not being vague and I'm not new either haha, I just enjoy all types of games. I'm not limited to a single genre.

There are actually quite a few multiplayer FPS for Mac. Here's more than a few active ones. Keep in mind that almost all of these are on steam.

On Steam

First of all, if you didn't know already, Steam is the biggest distributor of games on PC, Mac, and Linux. It's basically Xbox Live or PlayStation Network, though free, has way more deals (Summer sale FTW, free weekends where certain games are free to download and play for a limited time, and are also on sale), has a mod hosting service, and has over 65 million users (I think it hit 70 million recently.) If you want to game on PC, Mac, or Linux, you need Steam.

The Counter-Strike Series
Counter-Strike
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
Counter-Strike: Source
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Counter-Strike has always been one of the most popular FPS on PC, and the whole series is available for Mac. Global Offensive is the second most popular game on Steam, right below the MOBA Dota 2.

The Call of Duty Series
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops: Mac Edition

MW2 and MW3 were just ported to Mac a few days ago, and are rather active, with about 4k players each, though some may doubt their quality. MW1 usually has about 400 players, and is the best COD. Black Ops: Mac Edition never really got off the ground because it didn't have cross-platform multiplayer. Call of Duty 2 is pretty much dead.

The Borderlands Series
Borderlands
Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is way more popular.

The Half-Life Series
Half-Life
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life: Source: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

Source Deathmatch is dead.

The Left 4 Dead Series
Left 4 Dead: GOTY Edition
Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 has all the Left 4 Dead 1 levels, and has more players.

The Team Fortress Series
Team Fortress Classic
Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress Classic is dead, while the sequel Team Fortress 2 is an incredibly solid and fun F2P game that has about 50,000 players at any time.

Insurgency

Has about 800 players, really overrated tactical fps.

Rust

Popular open-world survival game, made by the developer of Garry's Mod, nicknamed "Garry's DayZ."

Garry's Mod

Originally a mod for Half-Life 2, this is a sandbox game with huge amounts of custom content, lots of fun gamemodes (Trouble in Terrorist Town, Prop Hunt, Murder, DarkRP, etc.) and about 30,000 players on average.

Day of Defeat
Day of Defeat
Day of Defeat: Source

Distant relative of Counter-Strike. Small but great community for Source, the original is dead.

Killing Floor

2,000-3,000 players on average.

There are probably a lot more that I either forgot about or was too lazy to add, but here they are. Good luck!

I would like to add Infinity Wars ( http://www.infinitywarsgame.com ), it's an absolutely amazing TCG that I prefer over the the rest.

There's also Scrolls ( https://scrolls.com )from Mojang

F1 2013 is on Steam and had Mac/PC MP modes as does XCOM.

XCOM will soon have Mac/PC/Linux (+ SteamOS when it's officially released) cross platform multiplayer. :-)
