Just purchased a rMPB... A few questions.

Hi guys!

Just got myself a rMBP and so far, it's looking pretty good.

I actually upgraded from a mid 2011 MBA.

The mid 2011 MBA was extremely silent; there was literally no fan noise, etc. when browsing the web...

However, on my MBP, I can still hear a bit of noise even though I'm not doing much at all.

Is this normal?

Also, is there any settings that I should change, etc? I've never used a MBP so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I actually purchased OSX Mountain Lion on my MBA, however, I am also covered by apple's "Up to date" program since I just purchased the MBP.
How exactly does this work? Do I get Mountain Lion "key" which I can give to someone else? Or does nothing happen since I already purchased it?

I guess you can contact customer services and they may refund the money.

You can get a key from Apple which is just redeemed on the MAS. My rMBP makes no sound at all unless I start to game, I can't hear it over my fridge 5+ metres away at least (and fridges don't make much noise to begin with).

I bought ML on launch, and later the same day impulse bought a rMBP a few hours later. (lol) One email and a few hours after that my bank card was credited with the full purchase price of ML.

Apple's Customer Service is FTW!

I'm loving it so far. I'm just a bit concerned with the noise it is producing whilst idle.

I can hear the noise coming out even though its idle.

Is this working as intended? or is it meant to be dead silent?
My MBA was dead silent on idle.

Looking at istat pro, fan speeds:

Right: 2000rpm
Left: 2100rpm

If you guys could let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Similar circumstances, definitely not the same experience.

Several emails, and still no refund. They just keep sending me more codes for Mountain Lion.

And believe me, I'm being very clear...

Your fan speeds should be around 2000 on the right and 2160 on the left. Could it be the CPU making an audible sound? I usually hear something like that during regular tasks when my Time Capsule is backing up data, otherwise I'm not exactly sure what your hearing.

Doesn't seem very likely you'd hear them as 2000rpm is the lowest, and supposedly these new fans are even quieter than previous gen. Are you in an absolutely silent environment?

Even with the TV on in the other room, I can still sorta hear it.

Just a question to rMBP owners; is the sound level pretty much the same as the MBA when idle?

I'll see if I'll be able to demo someone elses macbook pro retina and decide from there whether mine is working normally or not...

you must have very good hearing because short of flash or gaming the rMBP and MBA were both silent unless I place my ear next to the keyboard. In all seriousness at 2k fan speeds it should be silent.

Also, if I place my ears really close to the keyboard, theres a really slight "buzz/hiss noise"

Went to an apple store and they exchanged it. Hopefully this one will be good. Will keep you guys updated.

when you actually do something on your computer, you'll hear it.

Same problem. I can hear the fan on the right side as soon as the rMBP turns on. I have an appointment on Monday at the apple store.
