Is anyone else experiencing poor graphic performance after upgrading to ML/10.8?

We have a couple Mac Pros in our office and since upgrading them to 10.8, our graphic designers are saying that animations lag and hang while using various applications (i.e. Adobe CS6 applications).

Specs: 3.33GHz 6-core Xeon, 16GB Memory, 512 SSD + 1TB HD, Radeon HD 5770 (1GB) Video Card

Can't believe you upgraded them so soon. All my fleet are still on 10.6.8. Kudos.

Hello,

It depends on the apps. Here are the results for quite a few popular apps.

I was going to upgrade my new3.06 12 core today, but not after reading this. The Mac Pro's have such average graphics performance when compared to Windows machines, that I try to hold onto as many frames as I can. This performance should improve right? Does Mt. Lion have any new 7970 graphics drivers? Will we ever see Apple blessed high performance cards on this aging dinosaur?

Yes, right now if you go with Nvidia GTX 670/680. It's not exactly "blessed" by Apple, but the basic drivers are in 10.8, enabling CUDA is now a snap, and OpenCl isn't too hard to get going.

So this is going to seem a bit odd...

Out of our two identical Mac Pros running Mountain Lion, we're only noticing graphic issues on one of the workstations. They both have the same monitors (2x Asus PA246Q 24" monitors) - however, the workstation with poor graphic performance has one of their PA246Q monitors rotated in portrait mode.

If I rotate the monitor back into landscape mode, graphic performance seems to improve.

Hi Loa,

I was wondering what settings Barefeats are using in their Heaven 3 bench?
I ran it today at 1440x900 windowed and got 63.4 fps so I assume I am not using the same settings. Do you know what I'm missing?

Update: The only thing I could see different to Barefeats benching was fullscreen instead of windowed so I ran it again full screen, not much difference tbh. So I can gather that ML has a 16 fps improvement over SL (which I'm using) or would the difference between my MP 3,1 octo and their testbed 5,1 hex be a more significant cause of the increase in performance?

I don't know anything about Heaven 3, so I don't know if the CPU (or RAM) has any great effect. Try messing with the settings. If you just can't match those from barefeats, then the CPU must have a significant effect.

THIS is just SAD! I mean WTF MAN?

----------

I have heard this form, soo many people! Most who have upgraded form 10.6 wish they hadn't

To be fair I would expect any 10.x.0 build to be a bit rubbish until the bug fix patch 10.x.1 is released. As a rule I never adopt new OS releases until a later version having had previous experience of crunchy drivers. I didn't go to Snowy from Leopard till 10.6.2 was released. I would advise any migration to Mountain Moggy be delayed a bit too, if you are concerned by performance glitches.
