Make My Own Dictonary App

I am masters student, and I have a set of words that i have been collecting for months that I would like to use in essays etc. However I was looking for a program/app that would allow to create my own dictionary that would allow me to search words and their synonyms that may give me an alternative word for what I am writing about.

I believe you can access mydictonary on the dictionary app that comes with your Mac can someone explain simple detailed instructions on how you do this as so far I am lost and confused regarding it, or an app or a database type that will suit my needs.

There is a discussion about Scrivener being used for this topic Personal Dictionary:

old, slow, and confused
but at least I'm inconsistent!
