Hey forums! I posted a few months ago about my sad, dead 12 inch G4 (1.5ghz, 1.25gb RAM) looking for help on getting it to run and got lots of helpful suggestions, but I sort of dropped off the face of the earth for a few months until spring semester was over. Now I'm back and have free time and am at it again. Here's what's up:
When I turn on the G4, it makes the boot up chime and goes to a grey (or white?) screen. No picture at all, just white-grey. It flashes a couple times then stays like that. When I tried to use an external display, the external turned pale blue but that's it. I tried resetting the PRAM, booting into single user mode or safe mode, etc, and got nothing. So I set it aside for a few months until summer came.
Just today I firewired it with my G4 Sawtooth tower and couldn't read the hard disk. I erased it completely, checked it (no problems), and installed 10.4 on it (10.4 is the only OS installation DVD I have, and it's the one I like best, though I think 10.5 should run on it as well).
The G4 now works fine with an external display. Progress! Unfortunately, there's still the little problem of that grey-white screen.
So here's what I'm thinking: There are replacement LCDs on Ebay for like $30, but I'm not sure if the LCD is what's wrong. I mean, it doesn't *seem* broken, there are no cracks or anything. I don't have another PowerBook to test the monitor in, either. Any ideas on what could possibly be wrong with it other than the LCD? I know how to replace the HDD, RAM, and Keyboard but I've never touched the LCD before and I'm a bit nervous about it.
Any ideas or advice would be very welcome
