The only test you need to do is to use it.
Test whether you're happy with it or not.
Don't go looking for problems that are not fundamental to the running and enjoyment of the machine. If they're going to affect your experience then you will notice them yourself.

Yes, could not agree more with what you have said. As for OP a quick search using the search bar in the top right hand corner of your screen would have found you much information on what you are looking for. I recommend you use that next time.

As for the ghosting issue do as follows:
Set a dark (grey/black) background on your macbook.
Next open up google and some other applications that contrast the dark coloured background.
Wait 10-30min and minimize your open applications.
Voila, if you have ghosting there should be some sort of light colour from the applications imprinted on your background.
Else you are good to go.

Why should I not check a machine when it arrives? It is checking for faults that may not be apparent at the start, but become apparent later. You could argue that the ghosting issue would only become apparent at the time at which an image remains there for sometime, what if I didn't come across this scenario until 2 months after?

If you have an LG screen you might as well exchange it until you get a samsung screen. I went through 3 LG screens and they all had ghosting problems. It seems apparent that a majority of those things with LG screens have this issue. It's just a matter when it will show up

Indeed! We should all spend over £2k and just not worry about it having any issues!
You're clearly new to Apple and believe they are perfect. I've been an Apple user for 13 years, but I know when I spend £2k that I expect it to perform perfectly from day one.

after finding a flawless LG-display I ran:

Sorry to disappoint you, I've been an Apple user for 9 years.
It appears that in your 13 years you've become lazy and have drifted into the same pool as those who hunt for problems with new machines. Or maybe you've always been in that pool.
Seriously, if you lift the lid on the rMBP enough times in the 14 day grace period then you're going to notice whether it has any problems that affect you or not. Including image retention or ghosting.
I don't believe that everything Apple does is perfect but I know enough to be able to evaluate whether something that I hold in my hands is right for me or not, without consulting a group of strangers on an internet forum.
Try to think for yourself.
