I need help!

I started to download a large file from a website, but the download failed (for reasons unsure). The
icon is on the desktop (where I download all of my files) and I can't remove it. I have tried restarting the computer, relaunching finder, and just about anything else I could think of, but everytime I try to put it in the trash, I get a "cannot remove while in use" message. I have for now moved it to the corner of the screen, but, I WANT IT GONE!!!! It has been here for over a week. I am using OSX on my new iMac (which I totally dig!). Someone please tell me what to do!!!

The easiest way without getting into terminal stuff would be to boot into OS9 and trash the file, in OS9 nothing should be using it and file permissions won't mean anything.
 
just open the terminal

type "cd Desktop"
press enter

type "sudo rm *filename*"
press enter
enter your password
press enter

that should work for ya
 
Easiest way

Log out.
Log in as "root"
go to users/*your normal login name*/desktop
trash the file
Empty the trash
Log out
Log back in with normal login name.

Thanks. I booted into 9 and erased it there. I should have thought of that before. How do you use terminal. Is it like dos is to windows? Where is it? I am clueless, as I am a recently former PC user that has just recently seen the light.

Terminal is found in applications > utilities.
It's kinda link dos in that it's a command line interface, but the terminal is far more powerful than dos, it basically gives you the full power of UNIX, something best not messed with to much if you don't really know what your doing like me. 😉
 
You've just been erased...

Click here... ... also, this booting into OS 9 stuff sounds nice in theory, but there is Always a way to do these things in X. Plus look out, soon there's no more 9.
