i purchased mountian lion the other day and during install, the progress bar makes it to about 7 or 8 minutes remaining then chokes up and stops moving. After a few minutes, it gives an error message stating that installation failed
So, I restart and and then get the installer and then same thing again. its stuck in a loop. I tired resetting PRAM. I booted into recovery mode and ran disk utility, but found no errors. i do then get the option to try and install again, and i get the sme error at about 7 or 8 minutes left.
I stupidly don't have a backup at the moment. I got overzealous in telling the installer to startup and go and had forgotten that I had to reformat the drive my backup was on and had not yet cloned a new one.
Any idea on on what is causing this? Or on the best way to recover my user folder from the half installed, non-booting drive? I was hoping a boot into target disk mode and then cloning that folder over would do the trick, but when I do that, the file system is really weird and messed up. Get Info shows that it has 89gb of data, which seems right, but if I look in my user folder it say it only has 1.8gb which should be more like 60 or so. Also there's a bunch of folders labeled things like "install.3113AamVa" five of them to be exact and each one has a different string of numbers and letters after install and then two folders called private and receipt.
help!!!
