Gates gives $100m to fight HIV, $421m to fight Linux

The register slams Bill Gates for giving $100M to fight AIDS in India, while spending $421M to market Windows over Linux.

Although Linux has eroded a chunk of MS' biz in the corporate server OS market, Linux will never make any real in roads on the personal desktop, except in third world countries. But MS software are mostly pirated in those countries (over 95% of the software in China and Asia are pirated) anyway so MS' high prices don't really matter.

But don't be alarmed, this site, The Register and its sister The Inquirer, slams everybody. I am surprised they are still selling banner ads.

It is really shallow to just discount such a huge donation as just a marketing ploy to make more money in India, a poor nation where the average person lives in squalor and makes less than a dollar a day while rats, monkeys, and cows flurish for nonsense religous reasons.

$100,000,000 to fight AIDS in India is more than the US government has ever given to fight HIV in India or anywhere else.

It must be pointed out that the donation is from Gates' Trust, whereas the $421M is spent from MS' corp. coffers. Such big corporations spend fortunes to market their products. Worse case is McDonalds. They spend about billion dollars a year on ads to get people to chow on their secret sauce.

how much did he spedn to fight HIV here in the states? How much to poverty? Cancer? MS? Anything? Ah, but he did spend money in India which seems to be a hot bed for tech right now. Am I reading to much into it? Or is there really an issue here that you are missing?

India really does need protection now

Bill Gates greeted with eight-foot condom

An eight-foot tall condom greeted Microsoft chairman Bill Gates Thursday during a visit to an Indian city, a tribute to mark his generosity in fighting AIDS.
The world's richest man smiled when he saw the giant air-filled condom in India's rising technology hub of Hyderabad, where his company has opened its first software development center outside the United States. The billionaire inaugurated his four-day visit to India on Monday by announcing $100 million in contributions from his charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to spread awareness on AIDS. --Reuters

Good thing India brought protection.

In other news Gates was reported saying that he would only need a condom 1/100th that size.
