Well, it's official. It's the iPhone 5; everyone else can shut up about it now.

or maybe the iPad mini rumors are wrong and Apple is releasing an iPhone with a 5" screen, their first foray in to the “red hot” phablet market. /sarcasm

Didn't Tim Cook say they didn't call the new iPad 'iPad 3' as it was too predictable?

Well, they didn't call the iPhone 5 'the new iPhone' as that would've been too predictable!

It's a "5" because it's NOT the iteration number, stupid! That way 3GS was #3.

It'll be the "New iPhone".

The 5 refers to the new 5" iPod Touch which will be complemented by the 7" "Mini iPad" when it's launched in October.

"while rumored iMac updates and the launch of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are likely to appear separately"

what does this part mean? when can we expect 13in Retina MacBook?
would be nice to catch the current deal with edu pricing + $100 iTunes card.

I don't get it. Why would they re-release last year's iPhone as the iPhone 5?

Must admit, after the iPad that comes as a surprise to me.

Not that it matters even remotely, but thought they might be executing a slightly broader naming strategy starting with the iPad.

This is unusual for Apple in many ways, most notably how it's going to happen about exactly a week after the Nokia/Windows Phone announcement. Comparisons will be everywhere, and if Apple doesn't deliver on NFC and Wireless charging in a 4.5" device, it will appear as though they're slipping.

And they won't add that much tech to the iPhone 5. Or if they do, color me surprised.
