AppleUnion, a Chinese site, has pictures of the
upcoming Puma (OS X 10.1) release...

While most of the page is in Chinese, you can see
screen shots depicting new Dock options, and
Preferences control panel.

I saw 10.1 in person.
A friend who works for a major software company told me it was "a beta of Mac OS X that's coming out in August." Take that as you will.
These pictures are consistant with what I saw. I didn't get a build number because it was not in the "About this Mac" dialog box. The version simply read 10.1
I can say that I played with if for about 10 mins. It is much much much snappier then 10.0.4. Still not perfect or as fast at 9.1 but actually a usable operating system now.
I went through all the system prefs and the biggest difference was in the dock prefs. You could move the dock to the right and left sides in addition to the bottom of the screen.
The bottom, top, and middle choices worked sort of like a right, left, and center justify in a word processor tacking the dock to the chosen side. My appology I tried this when the dock was on the right side. I now wonder what would happen when changing this with the dock on the bottom.
There were three minimize effects. They were "Geinie, Scale, and Suck (needs better name) ." I guess apple does want to call the last the Suck Effect. :-P
This lends credence to the idea of this being a beta. This release was given to at least one major software company that told their employes to load it for testing purposes.
In my excitement I forgot to check for DVD playback.

PS

Machine was an older Powerbook. Don't know the speed but it was not the pismo or the version just prior to that without the firewire. I think it's the machine right before that one (was that lombard or wallstreet?)
Anyways, it was a good 3 years old and had 192 MB RAM.

Wink The site is not down...

It is the link that isn't correctly written. Simply click on the following link and search on the page for the word "Puma"...

Question Puma Build #?

I've seen many pics of Puma with notes claiming that the build is 5D13. However, in the bug reporting section of Apples site for Darwin, many references for bug fixes report the fixes are slated for versions 5F13. Perhaps that is the actual intended build for Puma or are they already working on a post Puma version??

build #

i wouldn't expect the build number to be 5F13 untill Puma is finished, which it seems is not, especially if it still reads "Suck (needs better name)"

Cool dock options

The new dock options (orientation, pinning, suck/scale effects) are already available. You can either modify the com.apple.dock.plist file in your Preferences folder, or you can use editing tools such as:

actualy the suck thing is not just a 10.1 thing

its in the 10.0 as well just go to the terminal and type defaults read com.apple.dock.app i think and it shows what effect you have selected. same with the top and and bottom and side mounting. 10.1 is just giving a gui to the controls

Smile Puma 10.1 looks great

I hope these screenshots are real they look great , it is a shame that os x is slightly slower on a pismo which i use, i bought it after using a pc for a number of years (windows just wasnt as nice a gui), hoping that os x would be fast on a pismo , i know i should have bought a g4 desktop but i couldn't buy both a desktop and a laptop as well and i had to get the laptop. I hope that powerlogix or sonnet produce an upgrade for the pismo so it runs at 600 mhz even if it is a g3 and os x will be reasonablably fast . the recent upgraded os x seemed to run reasonably well. I hope we see some good stuff this MWNY.

Here's hoping

Smile Look at the shots

There's a "burn" icon in the finder window! And I notice a Colorsync utility!

Cool!
