How to turn off Find My iPhone alert?

I like to keep tabs on my son. I see now, when I use find my iPhone, we both have iPhone 5s, an alert comes up that I used it. Any way to turn the alert off?

It shouldn't be doing this. It would defeat the purpose of this feature... alerting the thief he is being followed.

I tried it on my phone and my wife's phone and it does not show any notification on the device that is being tracked.

Just to clarify, what sort of alert comes up when you track the device?

I did find that under Location Services in settings, you can turn on a Status Bar Icon that will show up when someone is tracking the device. It was off by default on my phone and my wife's, but maybe your son turned it on?
