Paying carrier for unlock how to confirm?

I going to pay my carrier $50 to unlock my iphone 5 but how can I be sure that it will be unlocked? Is there some way to check?

I don't have have access to another carrier's sim card

I don't want to travel to another country and then find out that my phone is not actually unlocked.
