Mail Swoosh before SMTP

Apple: PLEASE...

In iOS6, the behavior for the mail swoosh sound appears to happen the second the send button is pressed. Before, it happened when the mail was (presumably) accepted by the smtp server.

The problem is now there is no way to know if the message was actually sent unless you check the outbox and sent folders.

I use my phone to send important emails in the work environment.
We need this issue addressed as soon as possible.

I actually think this is more important than the maps issue.

If this is an issue for others, please send feedback as I have done to apple.

They did it so it would sound faster. But you are exactly correct, there's no way to tell if the mail delivered or is stalling now.
 
One thing that would be nice is a delayed send option. Not everyone mutes their phones for texting so if I need to send someone something late at night, I have to set a reminder to send the info in the morning. Why not email? Because nobody checks their email anymore. *rolls eyes*

Because spam comes at all hours, so either your friend has figured out how to silence the e-mail sound while they sleep or they enjoy getting woken up by e-mail.

Texting and phone calls are different, but with e-mail those are pretty much the only 2 options. So you should never worry about when you're sending e-mails.

(I'd like that delayed-send feature too, it's useful in many situations. I'm just saying that you shouldn't worry about that particular reason.)

Well, the specific problem is that people don't check email as much as text messages. I consider a text to be less disruptive than a phone call because it's one bong for a text but four rings and a voicemail bong to leave a message. With a text, I know they'll see it the moment they pick up the phone, it's displaying on the lock screen. With email it could be hours before they see it, especially if buried under spam and cruft. Text in this case becomes a priority inbox nobody even has to setup or configure, it's just there by default.

For my own phone, I've disabled push email because all it does is suck up battery. I leave it on manual. So I can't be woken by an email anymore. :) Plus the muting of the mail bong is annoying when I'm listening to a podcast, I lose words that way.

I thought it did so someone wouldn't be so obsessive with the sound, which is kinda like counter-productive if you're just doing nothing waiting for the sound since it will be delivered anyway (or if it's not there will be "Mail not delivered" type message notified to you).
 
if it was changed on purpose (which i don't believe is the case), why wasn't the txt message "sent" sound also not changed to play at the very beginning rather than waiting until the txt actually has been sent.

Inconsistency between different design teams. Why is the stupid new phone dialpad white when dialing a number but when you hit the in-call pad it's black again? Why do some screens have the status bar across the top and others have it hidden? Music control buttons inconsistent between lock screen and itunes.

You need to have someone riding herd on the whole project to get all the different development teams working together and towards the same goal. Without that, you get chaos. But even with that, you can still have boneheaded decisions pushed to market, see antenna-gate. I bet the reason why nobody in-house had a problem with it is everyone was using their phone with a case anyway. I don't know why people even care what the phone itself looks like because it's never going to see the light of day after purchase. You'll never be touching the screen directly (film protector) you're never going to see the back of the phone (protective case.) Apple could put Hello Kitty back there and I wouldn't care because the phone will never be used naked, at least not by me.

AGREED 100%. It's very deceiving, and all to help user perception that iOS 6 sends text messages "faster." I just submitted feedback for this.
 
Yep, they are slipping.

I cannot for the life of me understand who would program this type of logic in.

Same as with OS X mail. In ML, they removed the progress indicator so you sit there wondering what's happening when it checks mail. If you want to see Activity, you have to open Activity Window.

fscking madness. It's these little things that drive me to distraction.

I've recently changed my job and i have to send a lot of emails now. At home it's usually OK because I'm coupled to WiFi.

But out and about it's totally misleading and I hate it. Before you knew where you were, but not now. A totally backward step!

iMessage user to work. It would also seamlessly failover to SMS if it couldn't. Not anymore! It won't even prompt you want it has failed.
 
If they insist on an immediate sound then I'd like one sound to give feedback as the button is pressed, then the swoosh when the email has *actually* been sent.
 
OMG this is so appalling. I am absolutely disgusted at this obvious attempt to deceive its users. My god if Ste.....
You friggen people are ridiculous.

This correct.

The swoosh sound when sending an email should happen AFTER negotiation with the SMTP server (mail server). That way you can be positive that it's going to either be sent, or that it failed at that point. That's how every other mail client is programmed. It's basic email client programming 101.

There is no point to have the sound the moment you press send. We know we pressed send! As it stands now, you send or reply to an email. The swoosh sound happens, then you have to either wait for some sort of non-descriptive message that the email failed, or you have to go to the sent items folder to see if it was actually sent.

Despite weeks now of trying to figure out the Exchange server send problem where it fails (although the swoosh sound happens), I give up.

Sending or replying to Exchange account emails is too unreliable with iOS6.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's caused me grief where people have simply not received those mails. That's just not acceptable in the corporate environment.

The thing that annoys me the most is that apple WILL NOT respond to any of these concerns. They're too focused on things like maps. I for one don't give a hoot-nanny about maps. I just want my phone to function properly as a corporate tool like it did with iOS5.

Man - that upgrade to iOS6 was the biggest mistake of my apple life - especially with NO OPTION to roll back.

What a gimmick. "Oh wow, that email was sent really quickly!" Nope, it just pretended that it was sent. I've updated to iOS 6, and I like it better than iOS 5, but this is just retarded.

What's so ridiculous about requesting that the "mail sent" sound play when the mail is sent? Whoever changed that is "friggen" ridiculous.

I think you've missed the point here. It's not about deception.

It's about proper functionality of the application. When the sound happens, one assumes that negotiation with the server is completed.

With iOS5, when you heard that sound and no error appeared on the screen, you could look away from the phone knowing it was sent. Now you have to check your sent items folder! I just can't rely on my phone anymore if replying to an exchange server account email.

Obviously if you never use your phone for email, it won't affect you.
