Apologies if this has been asked before, but does anyone know why the iMac's backlight can't be turned right off like the backlight of MacBooks can?

Dimming doesn't work, that's what F1 and F2 keys are for. I am not sure if there is support for it with built-in display or any other display. It'd make sense if the OS would remap these keys for display brightness for desktop computers.

I also don't think the system would allow you to remap F1 key for that particular keyboard combination (maybe Keyboard Maestro could do it but not worth the price IMHO).

Turning off the backlight on the iMac apparently has some undesired side effects on performance. Notice the negative impact on the geekbench screen grab below . . .
