Just did a quick vid to test just how scratch proof the back of the iPhone 5 is.
I'm sure if you dug in hard enough it would cause some lasting damage, but for general day to day scratches, the coating seems to hold up well. I think you'd be perfectly fine with just a bumper case.

Also, before anyone thinks I suffer from mental retardation, and like to scratch my phones for fun.. This is the iPhone that is already chipped/scuffed and is going back, so I thought there's no harm in testing its limits!
