You can also use Preview, but you have to go to View > Customize Toolbar... and add the Play tool.

If you have Adobe ImageReady you can see each frame individually, as well as play the whole thing. Not sure what other apps let you do this.

Preview also lets do this.
This option is only available in Preview 2, which came with Panther. Preview 3 in Tiger seems to be missing this option, too, just like the Target size for exported jpegs... I'm beginning to be real p*ssed at Apple for their crippling of Preview...

Luckily I saved Preview 2 from the Previous System folder after archive & installing Tiger, so I have both versions...

Quicktime can also play animated GIFs.

A bit off-topic, but is there any way to prevent Safari from doing the animation from animated GIFs? (I want it to show the first/whatever frame).

Animations makes it nearly impossible for me to read some pages (a lot of people have animated avatars on macrumors, for exemple).

Yes, I browse with java and plug-ins disabled. Animated GIFs are the last problem I can't get rid of (no option to disable them in Safari).

Do you really feel that animated .gifs make it nearly impossible to read MacRumors? I never thought they were that bad. Some are little excessive, but overall I don't find it distracting.

I really can't read anything if there's animation on the screen. I have to right-click so the animations stop, and then I can read. I actually browse with java and plug-ins disabled for that reason.

It's even listed as a mistake of web design on Jakob Nielsen's website.
