Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Fortnightly Challenge and Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.



Policies


*One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day.

*Quote with Thumbnails - When you quote an image please restore it's thumbnail before replying. You can do this either by installing the AutoTIMG browser extension or by editing the code by hand.

Wow this is incredible. I use photomatix to mix different exposures but this looks so amazing. I will have to do some research on using luminosity masks and give this a try. Thanks for the inspiration.

Here is mine. This is Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park in Maine. I used three exposure in photomatix and then remixed in some of the originals in photoshop to get this result.

Hi, I have never used Photomatix but have used Nik's HDR pro and I've found that it's hit or miss with the software approach. Sometimes results are pretty good, but in general it seems that mostly in transition zones the software doesn't know what to do and results are compromised.

I am thinking of creating a video or series of video tutorials about luminosity masks. They can be a bit confusing to get started but well worth the effort to learn and as a way to do advanced selections and advanced masking, nothing will beat them.

This one looks as though it's been Photoshopped, but it hasn't -- which is why I'm posting it. If I saw it somewhere else, I'd be suspicious. It was just the right combination of the white on the wings, light, focus, etc.

Nikon D800, handheld, ISO100, 70-200, f7.1 @1/200. RAW image minimally-modified with Lightroom 4, yesterday in the Los Angeles National Forest.

I've been using the 70-200 since July, and I'm more and more impressed with what it can do. Yeah, it's big and heavy -- but what IQ! When I swap it with the 28-300 I see differences, but of course I know which is which. In a few days I'll do a blind test.

This is a beautiful treatment of a lovely shot.... did I read somewhere that you'll put up something to show us how to use this luminosity stacking ? Mine for today... moon over Parry Sound on Georgian Bay. The weather here has been marvellous. Doylem, you mention your weather is getting worse. I hope it dries up soon...

Thank you for your kind words. I am in the process of recording tutorial videos and as soon as they are ready I'll message you privately. I don't know what the rules of the group are in terms of promoting one's work openly so I'll keep it private and avoid any issues.

This particular photograph was shot with a Canon 60D and Sigma 17-50 2.8 at f/11

I am debating whether I want to trade that Sigma for a Canon 17-40L. You see, the Sigma has been good to me but more and more I'm growing dissatisfied with soft corners. Also, I am planning on going for a full frame camera (eventually at least) and that lens will not work with a FF camera.

It was a sunny and foggy morning here. I managed to get this shot with my iPhone 5 before the light went away. I tried it with my Canon 60D, but I screwed up focus and then the light went away. So this is the best I got. No purple flare in this iPhone shot, either.
