Keyboard changes in ML or has this behavior been there?

Yesterday I "held down" a key on my wireless keyboard and I got an iOS-like popup with character options... like holding down the "n" key to get and option for "ñ".

I really like that... but I am wondering how long it has been there.

Is it new in ML? Lion? SL? LOL/ How long have I been missing out?
